Claude now edits your Google Docs and Sheets directly from a sidebar, and Haiku 5.5 cut API prices 90%. What the beta does, what it costs, and how to set it up.

On October 6, Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta: Claude now lives in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, reads the file you have open, and edits it directly. Twenty-four hours later came Claude Haiku 5.5, the cheapest and fastest Claude model yet, at $0.10 per million input tokens.

I’ve been building marketing systems since before the web existed, and I can tell you the pattern that matters here: the tools that stick are the ones that don’t ask you to change how you work. This one meets you inside the document you were already editing. That’s worth ten flashy “AI platforms” that want you to copy-paste text back and forth.

Here’s what it does, what it costs, how to set it up, and where I’d hold back.

What Claude for Google Workspace Actually Does

The add-on puts a Claude sidebar beside your open file. According to Anthropic’s announcement, Claude can read the doc, sheet, or deck you’re working in, see your current selection, and make changes directly in the file — with edits shown as suggestions you apply or dismiss, so nothing changes without your approval.

The practical capabilities, per Anthropic’s own documentation:

  • Docs — draft from scratch, rewrite, restructure, and restyle long documents without leaving the file
  • Sheets — write and fix formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, clean data, and add tabs; for joins or heavier cleaning, Claude can pull a range into Python and write results back into the sheet
  • Slides — draft and restyle decks, with new slides shown before you accept them

A second beta feature, the Google Docs/Sheets/Slides connectors, works the other direction: from a Claude chat, you can ask Claude to create or edit a Google file directly — “make a Google Slides deck from these notes” — and it opens in a pane beside the conversation. On Team and Enterprise plans, a workspace owner has to enable connectors first.

One privacy detail I appreciate: in the sidebar, Claude only sees the file you opened it in, plus any connectors you turn on. Google lists both permissions before you approve the install.

The Setup: Ten Minutes, Two Permissions

Installation is straightforward. If you can install a Chrome extension, you can do this:

  1. Check your plan. The beta requires a paid Claude plan — Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise. Claude Pro runs $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) per Anthropic’s pricing page. Free plan users are out of luck for now.
  2. Install from the Google Workspace Marketplace. Search for Claude, click Install, choose the Google account you use for Docs and Sheets, and review the two permissions Google shows you.
  3. Open any file and go to Extensions → Claude → Open Claude, then sign in with your Claude account.
  4. Connectors (optional). To have Claude create files from chat, toggle on the Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors in Claude’s connector menu.

Admins on Team and Enterprise plans can deploy the add-on domain-wide or to selected groups from the Google Admin console, which matters if you’re rolling this out to staff rather than experimenting solo.

One known limitation worth flagging: Connected Sheets tabs fed by live BigQuery data can’t be read or edited — pull those rows into a regular tab first.

What It Costs — and Why Haiku 5.5 Matters for the Math

Here’s where the story gets genuinely good for budget-conscious businesses. The sidebar itself consumes your Claude plan’s usage — no separate line item beyond your $17-20/month Pro subscription. But the pricing news underneath it changes what agentic automation costs everywhere:

Per 1M tokensHaiku 5.5 (≤100K prompt)Haiku 4.5Sonnet 5.5
Input$0.10$1.00$2.00
Output$0.50$5.00$10.00
Cache write (5 min)$0.125$1.25$2.50
Cache read$0.01$0.10$0.10

Haiku 5.5 is 90% cheaper than Haiku 4.5 for prompts under 100K tokens. Above 100K, a second tier kicks in at 5× the base rate ($0.50/$2.50) — the first Claude model with a long-context price tier, so keep an eye on that boundary for big documents. Anthropic’s blended “75% cheaper” figure weights the two tiers by real traffic.

The specs: 1M-token context window, 128K max output, adaptive thinking with a new effort parameter (medium by default), and availability on the Claude API, AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. On the benchmarks Anthropic published, it beats GPT-6 Luna almost everywhere while costing a fraction.

Translate that: classifying and tagging a thousand customer emails, extracting data from receipts, routing inquiries — high-volume marketing chores that were cost-prohibitive at $1/M input now cost roughly a dime. That’s the difference between “we tested it once” and “we run it every day.”

Five Real Workflows for a Small Business

What would I actually point a client at first? These are the jobs I’d hand this setup in week one:

  1. Fix the spreadsheet you’re afraid of. Open your messy sales export, select the broken columns, and ask Claude to “clean this range — standardize the date formats, split first and last names, and flag duplicate orders in a new column.” It writes the formulas in place; you review as suggestions.
  2. Pivot tables without the tutorial. “Build a pivot table showing revenue by product category by month, with a native chart beside it.” This alone saves an afternoon a month for most small operators.
  3. The proposal rewrite. Paste last quarter’s proposal, then: “Tighten this to one page, keep the pricing table, and rewrite the intro for a restaurant client rather than a retailer.”
  4. Deck from notes. With connectors on: “Make a Google Slides deck from these meeting notes — one slide per decision, with the action owner named.”
  5. Monthly reporting chore at API scale. If you’re comfortable with a developer or a no-code tool calling the API, route your recurring summarization and tagging jobs through Haiku 5.5 at $0.10/M input and let the sidebar handle interactive work.

If you want help wiring any of this into your actual marketing workflow — the reporting, the content calendar, the lead routing — that’s precisely the kind of systems work Grey Visual does. Bring us your messiest recurring task and we’ll tell you honestly whether AI belongs in it.

Where I’d Hold Back: Beta Means Beta

Fifty years of watching “revolutionary” tools teaches you to respect the word beta. A few cautions:

  • It’s a beta. Anthropic’s own help pages list current limitations and say some features “may not work reliably.” Don’t bet your month-end close on it yet — keep a manual fallback for anything with a deadline attached.
  • The review step is the feature. The approval-first design means Claude suggests, you accept. Resist the temptation to bulk-accept. The value is a tireless junior assistant, not an unsupervised editor of your books.
  • Community context on switching costs. Reddit threads since the GPT-6 launch have plenty of users saying they’ve moved to Claude (some calling GPT-6 Sol “a massive downgrade,” per r/ChatGPT discussions). Sentiment is real but anecdotal — run your own work through both before you move your monthly spend.
  • Context discipline. The sidebar sees the open file and your enabled connectors — that’s it. If a task needs your CRM, your drive-wide files, or live web data, you’ll be doing more setup than the quick win deserves.

None of these are deal-breakers. They’re the normal friction of week-one software. But a business that adopts with eyes open keeps its leverage; one that flips everything on at once creates its own outages.

The Bottom Line for Small Businesses

Two releases, one theme: capable AI is moving into the tools you already use, at prices that stop being an excuse. The Workspace beta is free to try with any paid Claude plan; Haiku 5.5 makes background automation cost pennies instead of dollars. For a small business on Google Workspace, this is the cheapest meaningful productivity upgrade of the quarter — and you can evaluate it in a single afternoon.

My advice: install the add-on on a copy of a real document, run your three most annoying recurring tasks through it, and judge it on those results — not on a demo. If it holds up, it earns a place in the stack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Claude for Google Workspace work on the free Claude plan?
No. The beta requires a paid plan — Pro ($20/month, or $17 annually), Max, Team, or Enterprise. Free-plan users can still use the Google connectors’ chat-based features only where available on their tier, or upgrade.

How much does Claude Haiku 5.5 cost?
$0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100K tokens — 90% cheaper than Haiku 4.5. Prompts over 100K tokens pay a 5× long-context rate of $0.50/$2.50.

Is Claude for Google Workspace safe for business data?
In the sidebar, Claude only accesses the file you open it in plus connectors you explicitly enable, and Google shows both permissions before install. Edits arrive as suggestions you approve. Treat it as you would any third-party Workspace app: review permissions, start on non-sensitive files.

Can Claude edit my spreadsheets directly?
Yes — in Sheets it writes and fixes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, adds tabs, and can run Python over a range and write results back. Connected Sheets (live BigQuery) tabs are not supported yet.

How do I install Claude in Google Docs?
Install the Claude add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace, approve the two permissions, then open any Doc and go to Extensions → Claude → Open Claude and sign in with your Claude account.
